Set
in New Mexico's high country you will find the Cimarron Canyon State
park. After traveling through the canyon, you will understand why
New Mexico is called “the Land Of Enchantment”. Cimarron
Canyon is part of the 33,116 acre Colin Neblett Wildlife Area which
is the largest wildlife area in the state. A 400 foot high granite
formation known as the Cimarron Palisades is located here. Legends
has it that when settlers came through the canyon on their trek
west, the Indians would savagely kill them and hang their bodies
from the Palisades to ward off other travelers.
The river in the Cimarron canyon is a fly fishers dream. Matching
the hatch is the most successful method of fishing the stream but
it isn’t really necessary because of the abundance of insect
hatches that continue throughout the warm months. Fishing in the
winter is almost impossible because the water flow is almost cut
off at Eagle Nest Lake Dam to store water for next year’s
irrigation.
The road from Questa to Red River is one of exquisite beauty. The
winding roads, lush vegetation and occasional glimpse of the river
make for a lovely drive.
Who wouldn’t be happy with a Large Letter Greeting from New
Mexico? Indeed the Zuni sign is the original signature of the state.
