RED
RIVER, New Mexico is a fascinating
little village away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The people took the sign, “Slow Down and Live” to heart,
and the ease and enjoyment of living is contagious here. Red River
is a place many dream of, and their joy is boundless when they discover
this beautiful valley. It is the ideal place for family vacations.
There is something interesting for every family member.
The
Monte Vista Lodge was built in 1932, and was the gathering spot
for many vacationers. During the winter of 1959, in preparation
of Red River’s first ski season, the owners added heaters
to all the rooms. The old electrical wiring was not capable of handling
the added electricity and the beautiful lodge tragically burned
to the ground on New Year’s Eve 1959.
The
Red River Inn is still standing in Red River. Can you identify it?
It was known as “The Home of Hot Biscuits”. You could
buy a cup of coffee, and egg and a hot biscuit for 35 cents. The
building is located directly behind Red River Mining Liquor Store
at the corner of Main and Mallette and is owned by Fifth Generation
Brandenburgs.
The
Pioneer Lodge is of course, still a mainstay on Main Street, with
ice cream and coffee specialties pleasing crowds daily.
The
Old Red Rive Pass evokes many memories for those that traversed
the trail in order to get to Red River. There are many images of
the “Old Pass” and it remains a fun activity for travelers
today. |
