Taos-
Taos, New Mexico is a blend of several cultures, primarily
influenced by Native American, Mexican, Spanish and Anglo heritage.
Visitors are welcomed to Taos and find a world of invinitely varied
experiences.
Taos Pueblo, an ancient living Indian village, has a detailed oral
history which is not divulged due to religious privacy. Archaeologists
say that ancestors of the Taos Indians lived in this valley long
before Columbus discovered America and hundreds of years before
Europe emerged from the Dark Ages. Ancient ruins in the Taos Valley
indicate our people lived here nearly 1000 years ago. The main part
of the present buildings were most likely constructed between 1000
and 1450 A.D
Explore historic Taos Plaza and its side streets. Many of the old
adobe buildings that now house shops and galleries were once the
homes of some of Taos' leading citizens - Kit Carson, among them.
Bent street, and others take the visitor into back alley ways that
lead into an array of eclectic shops, restaurants, gallerys, and
taverns.
Another tour popular with visitors, the High Road travels through
awe-inspiring scenery and remote mountain villages that cling to
their Spanish colonial roots. In Ranchos de Taos, you will find
the San Francisco de Asis Mission. With its massive adobe buttresses,
high ceilings with vigas and hand-carved corbels, the mission is
Taos' most photographed and painted church. Georgia O'Keeffe and
Ansel Adams are two of many artists who have depicted the church
in their work.
